What is LEED?
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally-recognized green building certification system that was adopted by the United States for construction and demolition (C & D) in order to provide stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
The goal of LEED is twofold:
* To reduce waste, and to divert C & D debris from disposal in landfills
* To provide verification that a building or community was designed and built with sustainability in mind
PDC Area Disposal Service employs the only LEED-accredited contractor in Central Illinois and provides complete administration, oversight and accounting for all projects. We set high standards and stringent compliance requirements on every job we handle, and the relationships we have formed with authorities and other key contacts in the industry ensure efficiency and amenability. PDC Area Disposal Service is proud to have an outstanding track record, meeting or exceeding LEED-compliance levels set by the state on every project we administer. Though our participation in the LEED process is strictly voluntary, we believe it is of vital importance to demonstrate leadership in the field as well as environmental accountability.

FAQ
When is LEED compliance necessary for C & D?
LEED compliance is currently necessary for C & D when it is federally- or state-funded project of $5 million or more. The State of Illinois solidly backs and funds the LEED program.
What are the requirements of a LEED-compliant demolition job?
All materials that can be recycled must be, and a qualifying recycling center must be used. PDC Area Disposal Service bases the recycling center used on the geographic location of the job site, and strives to use local recyclers whenever possible to reduce transportation costs. We will ONLY use qualifying recycling centers.
What is involved in meeting the LEED requirements?
The U.S. Green Building Council is the governing body of LEED. In order to comply with LEED requirements, you must have the approval of the Green Council to be a licensed, LEED compliant recycling center in the State of Illinois. For more information on becoming a LEED compliant recycling center, contact Justin Zimmerman, LEED Certified Representative, at 309.681.3364 or jzimmerman@pdcarea.com.
How is waste separated?
PDC Area Disposal Service currently utilizes the source separation method for recycling materials. Waste is segregated directly at the job site in individual roll off containers for recyclable items such as cardboard and paper, concrete, drywall, trash, wood, metal and trash. For a full list of materials and a breakdown of disposable methods click here to download the PDC LEED Mater Waste Planning document.
How are disposal and recycling needs handled?
A roll off box for each material is deposited onsite and labeled. The material is separated at the job site by the contractor. When those containers are full, the contractor contacts PDC Area Disposal Service and within 24 hours we will exchange the containers with empty ones if necessary. We haul the full containers to the qualifying recycling center and perform the necessary paperwork to verify that the materials were recycled. It is the responsibility of the LEED manager to present documentation (weight tickets) on a monthly basis of all loads hauled for recycling or disposal.
What are the transportation requirements of LEED-compliant recycling loads?
Transportation of recycling loads within Illinois has a legal load limit of 9 tons. Loads such as concrete, drywall, brick and slate, require the use of a semi tractor trailer and have a load limit of 18 tons.
How is documentation handled?
Our PDC Area Disposal Service LEED manager will compile monthly LEED weight tickets with a summary of those tickets for every load hauled. These tickets will be submitted to the contractor by the 5th of each month. The contractor will then submit the tickets to the architect, and ultimately the State of Illinois, for LEED approval.
What is PDC Area’s service area?
Our radius encompasses as far as Danville to the east, Quincy and the Quad Cities to the west, Pontiac to the north and St. Louis to the south.
